Our Methodology
Our calculators are based on the multiplier method, the most widely used approach for estimating personal injury settlements in the United States. This method is documented in legal literature, used by insurance companies' internal claims software (including Colossus), and taught in law school.
The multiplier method works as follows: (1) Calculate all special damages (medical bills, lost wages, property damage). (2) Apply a pain and suffering multiplier based on injury severity — typically 1–2x for minor injuries, 3–5x for serious injuries, and 6–10x+ for catastrophic injuries. (3) Adjust for comparative fault.
Our workers' compensation calculator uses the standard two-thirds wage replacement formula used by most states, with adjustments for disability type and duration.
